When something unspeakably awful happens, as it did not long ago, apparently the new normal is for people to launch into their preferred wingnut conspiracy theory on Twitter. Rather than engage with any of that ghastly nonsense or wait for more horrific pictures to come in from Boston, I’m going to pick up my kids and hug them for an extra hour.

My thoughts are with everyone living in or visiting Boston, as well as those who have family and friends in Boston. I’m done for today.

Three bottle’s of 19th Century scotch have been returned to Shackleton’s Antarctic hut. Discovered underneath the floorboards of the hut in 2010, the scotch was bottled in 1898 (aged 15 years) and was buried during Shackleton’s 1907 expedition. The -22 degrees Fahrenheit were not enough to freeze the scotch (that’s pretty cool). The scotch was produced by the Mackinlay’s distillery, and the recipe had been lost. After the bottles were discovered, they were flown to Scotland, where the Whyte & Mackay distillery was able to recreate it.

If she has any Perkins loans, she’s getting assitance in the form of loans from the government. Granted, she does not claim she isn’t getting any assistance, but I still have some questions.

One: are you going full-time to community college or are you full-time seeking a four-year degree? There are differences in what is considered a full-time student for these scenarios. Either way, people who work and go to school full-time have to manage themselves in order to avoid burnout and succeed.

Two: do you mean to say your mother never got any government assistance? It is quite possible she never got any assistance whatsoever in terms of money from friends or family, but if she got a tax credit for being a single, working person with a dependent, than I would say she did get assistance. She didn’t have to pay the full, prescribed tax rate if she was able to apply some sort of credit. That’s assistance — from the government — albeit in the form of a credit off a total tax bill rather than direct nutritional or cash assistance.

Three: Do you really make enough money as a full-time college student and a member of the workforce to pay federal income taxes? If you do, I applaud you, but remember that after deductions and exemptions, you may not even have taxable income. Therefore, in the net run of operations, you really don’t pay federal income taxes, which invalidates your entire notebook statement and picture.

Four: have you filed federal income tax returns?
